It’s sad that so many dogs are stuck in cages in rescue centres across the UK. And the numbers are going up! Not only that, but the influx of dogs being imported from abroad is only adding to the problem.
Based on what we’re seeing in the Facebook groups this is mostly due to the strict rules surrounding rehoming. These rules sometimes make it impossible for someone to adopt a dog. So this in turn has led people to source a dog via other means.
Hence the demand for dogs from abroad, such as Romania, Cyprus, Spain, Greece and even the Middle East. It seems a much easier solution for many people. However, with that comes the added issue of the increase in behavioural problems as the adopter would not have have met the dog beforehand. This means there is no way of knowing how the dog will react to being shipped halfway across the continent. They’ll be scared and disoriented and going from living freely on the street into an enclosed environment.
We know from experience as we rescued 4 Baladi dogs while we were living in Sharm El Sheikh, straight from the street. Wild dogs cover many miles a day so to go from being free to being couped up in a house all day is a culture shock. They’re also sometimes locked in a crate while the owner is at work! Well, you can’t blame them for wanting out! Our own dogs, get extremely territorial indoors, and don’t like being cornered. They love to be outside. Baladies (Egyptian street dogs) are known for being of intelligent, adaptable and resilient, no need a challenge. But not all dogs are the same.
Inexperienced dog owners are at a loss at how to manage their new unruly dog and rarely give it enough time to settle in. Often owners treat their dogs like children, and focus on their own needs rather than the needs of the dog! Treating a dog like a child and using human emotion only confuses the dog so they act out. However, if you just apply the correct techniques, over time, you might find the dog’s behaviour improves. It’s usually your own behaviour that makes a dog act out as they’re just reacting to you!
So what to the new owners do? They send them to a dog rescue. So not only are the rescues over run with dogs already in this country, but they’re also bulging at the seams with dogs from other countries too. There just isn’t room. Much like the state of our own illegal immigration situation, but that’s another story and we don’t want to get too political!
Rescue Dogs Go Free
So we’ve decided that we’re going to give these dogs a special treat throughout August and September. We’re inviting dogs that have been overlooked time and time again, or some that have been in the kennels for way too long, to join us on our Doggy Days Out trips to Ynyslas Beach every Saturday or Sunday throughout August and September at NO COST to the charity or rescue. So the dogs get to enjoy a day of freedom ON US.
If you’re a local rescue in Powys, or surrounding counties, get in touch and we’ll work something out. All we ask is that you join our Facebook Group and also mention us on your socials and share!
These dogs deserve the best, so let’s give them a day to remember. Get in touch to book your most deserving dog(s) on this great day out.
