Dog Walker Choice – Some Useful Tips

Here are some things to consider before engaging the services of a dog walker:

Do they own a dog themselves?

This is an important question as they may not have ample experience in owning a dog, caring for one or indeed walking a dog.  When you own a dog you will have inside knowledge on their behaviour and what to expect.  It’s not just a case of putting the lead on and off you go.

Do they have experience with all sizes of dogs, in particular larger dogs?

Maybe the dog walker has only walked small, well behaved dogs.  A larger, more dominant, possibly reactive or aggressive dog may not be one they could handle. You need to ensure they are capable and indeed strong enough to control a larger dog.

Do they offer a free consultation?

This is also very important, as the dog walker should meet your dog(s) before embarking on a walk.  This is to ascertain the nature of the dog so they can get to know it and also what type of issues, if any, you might have with your dog.  Also, to find out what type of leash you use, and how much exercise your dog might need.

Does the dog walker have insurance?

While this is not a legal requirement, it will show you that the dog walker is serious about the service they provide.  It also shows you that they are responsible and have thought about any potential issues that may happen on a walk.  Most insurance companies insure dog walkers for up to 6 dogs. However, the local authority may have a cap on how many dogs they are allowed to walk at once.  For instance, what happens if your dog or another dog slips the lead and a fight ensues, or a person is attacked?  So at the bear minimum they should carry third party liability insurance.

Does the dog walker adhere to the Professional Dog Walkers guidelines?

This guide contains the best practice published by the Pet Industry Federation, endorsed by the Dogs Trust, RSPCA and the Canine & Feline Sector Group.  It is prepared with the best interests of animal welfare in mind to help those involved with dog walking services.  Whilst it is not required by law, again, it is a good sign that the dog walker is responsible and cares about animal health and safety.  You can view the guide lines here.

Is the dog walker first aid trained?

This is a good qualification to look out for in a dog walker. Although many won’t have this and it’s not a legal requirement. It’s also a good idea for them to carry a dog first aid kit with them, but again, not all dog walkers will do this.

Do they have any dog behaviour training or handling under their belt?

A good dog walker will want to familiar with dog behaviour and will constantly be updating their skills. This could be via an online accreditation course, or one to one training in a class. This is not a legal requirement, but a good thing to look out for. That way you will know they have a good understanding of how to deal with dogs.

Do they have adequate transport and the required DEFRA transport authority?

Will the dog walker be using a vehicle to take your dog somewhere? If so, they must hold a DEFRA Type 1 transport authority. This will ensure they adhere to the transportation of animals welfare guidelines. The dog walker must hold this license by law if they take your dog in a vehicle somewhere. If they do not, then they are breaking the law. You can read more about this here.

Do they have good feedback from other customers?

A reputable dog walking business will have an online presence such as a website, Facebook page or Google listing. Check out the reviews on their listings to see if there is any adverse feedback.

These are just some of the things you should be checking. Who you decide to use comes down to who you and your dog feel comfortable with. It’s your decision at the end of the day. Your dog’s reaction to the person will tell you everything you need to know!
